Poverty Questions

What was my definition of poverty?
My mother defines poverty as:

People who are powerless to buy the main essential items: food, clothing, and housing.
My father defines poverty as:
Deprivation of the basic humans needs: food, clothing, and shelter.
Mr. Pendell defines poverty as:
Not having access to the basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter on a daily basis.
What do you have questions about poverty?
I ask the following questions:
* Why do we live in a world that involves poverty? Why can't everyone share the wealth and have jobs, and all children have education? (this isn't related to communism)
* Why are there so many people involved in this huge problem?
* In the future, will poverty be eliminated forever? Or will this problem last forever?
My mother asks the following questions:
* Why do most countries in Africa get struck with poverty?
* Why are there still poor people in U.S., although the country is rich?

My father asks the following questions:
* How can we fight back poverty?
* What countries have the most population living under the poverty line?
Mr. Pendell asks the following questions:
* What is JIS doing to reduce poverty?
* What programs are available to reduce poverty? (e.g. orphanages)
* What is the percentage of people in Jakarta living under the poverty line?
What is the minimum wage in Jakarta, Indonesia?

Jawa Barat (Jakarta) has the minimum wage of 628,191 rupiah in the year 2009.
What feelings do you have about poverty?
What I feel about poverty is that I am fully dismayed and filled with grief, because of all the children dying without medication, no food or shelter. In addition, the children do not learn much, as they can't go to school for education.

What are some ways you think will get people out of poverty?
Remember that poverty begins without a source of income. Donation of school supplies, stationery items, (of course) money, and non-perishable food. These are for educational and health purposes. Another solution may be, the government uses taxes to help the poor as charity. Or, maybe the government may use the taxes to build a public school, and then hire teachers to teach the children how to read, write, and speak. The government can also build a health clinic in villages that are poor.

What is Poverty?

Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not being able to go to school, not knowing how to read, not being able to speak properly. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time. Poverty is losing a child to illness brought about by unclean water. Poverty is powerlessness, lack of representation, and freedom.

Poverty Simulation

1. How did it feel to be poor?
Being unfortunate and poor is tough work and tiring as you need money to survive. Like in the poverty simulation, we had to make paper bags on the road, not in a cold AC room. Poor people do not have these appliances! Getting a job works for starters, but sometimes the weathering can strike and can cause sicknesses to some members of the family.
2. Do you have a better understanding about poverty? What specifically did you learn from the simulation?
Poverty is simply starting off with no or a little quantity of money, a poor quantity of income, and simply have lack of wealth to purchase essential items such as food, clothing, and housing. What I learned specifically from the simulation was that if you work more, hopefully you will earn more money. Being sick prevents you from working, and requires money to cure the sickness.
3. Is poverty just about not having money? If not, what else is involved?
Yes, Poverty is just when you have a lack of money. Poverty is when you are powerless to buy the vital main three essential items: food, clothes, and housing.
4. Who had the most and least power in the simulation?
The families who had more children/members had the most power because they cooperated very effectively and earned plenty of cash. Less powerful families consist of families that have a few children, thus, causing the income to be in a small quantity.
5. What are possible (and realistic) ways out of poverty for those like the paper bag makers and millions of others in their situation in the world today? Remember almost one billion people in the world live on less than a dollar a day.
Begging, stealing, living with friends, and living on the streets are worst ways to get out of poverty. Why? Begging might help you earn some money, but people who are richer tend to ignore and reject you and want the money for themselves. Stealing money or food is helpful to your family, but it is illegal to steal, and you could end up in prison. Living with friends may help you get out of poverty, but you may not have your children to have education. Maybe your friends will just welcome you to stay, but not pay for your family. Living on the streets is the worst plan ever. The roads are bumpy and coarse, which causes difficulty in sleeping. Therefore, the best way to get out of poverty, is to get a job that pays. If you are able to earn tons of money in that job, you may be able to get out of poverty and also survive by buying food, clothes, and a place where your family can reside.
After the poverty game: My name is Sean Limzon and I am 13 years old, who will turn 14 on September 12. My family currently lives in an old house. I sleep on the floor in the house. Fortunately, my father and my mother worked on a family farm and earned a lot of money. Unfortunately, a sickness started to begin and was contagious, that it striked all members of the family. Later, we spent so much money on food, the sickness continued and our money dropped heavily. Unfortunately, everybody died of the symptoms. It was hard to earn money!
Game money summary (I only played for one year)
Starting money: 300 goud
Total money earned: 2652 goud
Total money spent: 3011 goud
Total money in possession: -59 goud

Who is Sean Limzon

Who is Sean Limzon? I am a 16 year old student who is going to be 17 on September 12 in Jakarta International School (JIS). The computer symbol shows me as a technology geek. Now I am very serious about Grade 9 and had to stand away from my favorite games until all the work has been accomplished.
What languages does Sean speak? I can speak 3 languages. English, Spanish, and Bahasa Indonesia. My Bahasa Indonesia nearly slipped away from me because the Spanish words seem to be pushing the Bahasa words away from my brain. Therefore, I almost lost my words in Bahasa. Fortunately, I studied by looking at subtitles in TV, the Star World Channel, looking at subtitles. I thought that was an easy way to study, but I'm just still looking at them so that I can rebuild my Bahasa language dictionary.
Where does Sean come from? I come from the Philippines. I was born in Indonesia, but my father and mother decided I would be a member of the Filipino family. Unfortunately, my father did not teach me Tagalog, a language of the Philippines, (some words in Tatalog are in Spanish), so I got stuck in speaking Bahasa Indonesia.
How does Sean feel about the environment? I feel disappointed of the poor quality environment. I believe that cars that consume petroleum should be disposed into the junkyard, because it is causing pollution and global warming. Into the future, we may drown in a big ocean of water because of our acts. Technology was adapted, and cars begin to run by using electricity instead of petroleum.
When did Sean play the piano? This happened somewhere in the year 2004-2005. My mother contacted a piano teacher to teach me and my 2 brothers, Kevin and Miguel some songs. As time elapses, I begin to be more experienced in playing the instrument. Today, the piano teacher still teaches me today, but the topic is about improvisation on the piano. Some songs also help me to review the bass clef.
Why does Sean play the violin? My mother decided to purchase me a violin, as she believes that I can be talented in music, and I agreed. Fortunately, there was a violin teacher to teach me, and I learn a lot from Mr. Osi. Thus, the reason why do I play the violin, is because I am super talented, and can be famous in an orchestra or other show.
