Nelson Mandela's Symbol

Nelson Mandela is a symbol of freedom. This mountain and the star represents freedom. In this website, Nelson Mandela stands in front of the snow covered mountains, and it conveys the symbol of freedom.

Selecting the Champion of Justice

Champion of Justice Ranks
1. Nelson Mandela
2. Nicanor Perlas
3. Walden Bello
Nelson Mandela is a Champion of Justice who has been elected president of the ANC, (African National Congress) at the first national conference at the ANC. Nelson was put on trial for betrayal of the country and was considered innocent in 1961. Nelson was sentenced to life imprisonment because he had overthrown the government by violence. While Nelson was in prison, his status grew; he was proudly accepted as the black leader of South Africa and he is a strong symbol (the symbol will be on Homework #4, if Nelson Mandela is selected to be my Champion of Justice) that represents fine resistance as the fine-apartheid movement gathered strength.

Marie: Shadow of the Lion Summary of Chapter 1-3

Marie is a very intelligent and courageous person. She is friends with Joseph and Agnes. Her teacher, Mr. Alazzar may be a mediocre teacher, but somehow, in another day, Mr. Alazzar vanished. When Marie and Joseph went to their home, Marie's parents reported her that the rebels are coming, and they have to hide from them for they were dangerous, and can kill people. Marie is scared because she and her parents have to escape the rebels and conceal themselves from killing them.
Martin Luther King made a speech declaring that everyone should be treated equally. That is why the black skin people may now enter US. Unfortunately, he was assassinated, but he is one of the most memorable person who declared that people should be treated equally according to the color of their skin.

Own Perspective on the Implicit Test

For my test, I took the Religion Implicit Test. The ranks of the religions are placed in a positive to negative scale. What I have learned was the other religions basic concepts. For instance, Abraham was the founder of Judaism and the Judaism is the religion of the Jews. This religion has its basis in the Bible and the Talmud. In Judaism, God is the creator of everything and the source of all goodness. (www.microsoftoffice.com)
My results:
Most positive on Christianity
Moderately positive on Islam
Partially positive on Judaism
Neutral/partially negative on Hinduism
Maybe the results were this way to indicate how well the person knows their religion. If they were fast on knowing their religion, that religion shall be considered most positive on their results graph. It may be biased in some way because the graph may not interpret the person exactly true, but close to what it gets.

Summary of Food Security Article One

This is a forum for discussion. You can see the other students' paragraph. You may compliment and criticize their paragraph. This is where you summarize the Food Security article. My paragraph is as shown below.
My article is from the World Food Programme; the programme is inviting students and people who want to be a film maker to create a video about world hunger through the international video competition, called "Hunger Bytes". According to Drew Barrymore, Ambassador Against Hunger, states that "Creativity and a desire to benefit the material, social, and spiritual welfare of humanity are a powerful combination to add in the video."

How Food Shapes our Cities

Write in a short paragraph explaining the video saw from Carolyn Steel and mention three pieces of evidence you collected from the video. Imagine you have one minute to explain the video.
My paragraph is as shown below.
In Carolyn Steel's introduction to the presentation, she first stated a question, "How do we feed a city?" She then states a that this is a question that is it occasionally asked. The video is basically about where food comes from, for instance, just like meat and chicken coming in from the north to London, from Scotland and Wales. (Carolyn states that animals enter the city) I have collected pieces of evidence from the video that there are approximately 7 billion carnivores (people) in the world. As plenty of meat is consumed, 19 million hectares of forest is destroyed each year, and 20 million hectares of existing arable is degraded. In addition, 1/2 of food produced in the U.S. is discarded. Carolyn also uses connections with different languages like "utopia for good place or no place" and "sitopia for food place". She believes that the world is a sitopia because we have plenty of food to produce and it is sufficient to feed the whole world, but the food is unequally distributed. In the slide that Carolyn used for what sitopia looks like looks very foundational because a food place shows a place that has food, whether cooking in a residence, in a restaurant, etc. Therefore I repeat what the the presentation is about like in the introduction, Carolyn talks about answering the question, "Where does food come from?" given with facts and statistics.

Food Security Banquet Questions

1. How did you feel about the banquet?
Answer: I take pity on the people who are in the green zone (low-income) because they only eat a bowl of rice and a tiny bottle of water.
2. Do you think it is fair that the world is divided in this way? Why or why not?
Answer: No, it is not fair that the world is divided this way because there are plenty of poor people waiting to be fed, and they perish after a few days because of starvation.
3. Do you think the people who got the big meal should help the others? Why or why not?
Answer: People in the blue (middle-income) and the black (high-income) should help the people in green (low-income) because it is stated that 50% of the world's population is in the low-income state. People who are rich tend to not care about poor people dying: they do not donate food at all. Therefore, it would be helpful to either donate cash or food to help poor people escape from starvation.
4. Do you think the cause of having a big percentage of people in the low-income group is that they do not hard? If you have other causes of this, why do you think that there is a very high percentage of people in the low-income group?
Answer: The cause of poor people in the low-income group is possibly yes, not working hard. They tend to get fired from their companies, or maybe their companies tend to give them a low-income. People who are in the green zone desires to earn a higher income, so they keep searching for a new job that pays.
5. How do our personal choices affect the world's unequal distribution of resources?
Answer: Our personal choices affect the world's unequal distribution of resources as we gain food. Some people in fast food restaurants tend to discard their leftovers. However, people in the green zone do not want to eat somebody else's leftovers. We fortunate people have their personal choices and do only seem to care about themselves, not others. We fortunate people keep our minds on other situations and events. Thus, the answer to this question is that we fortunate people DO NOT care about others who are unfortunate. The personal choices we make only affects ourselves, not the poor people of this world.
6. What might we all do to bring a fairer distribution of resources?
Answer: What we can do to help bring a fairer distribution of resources could possibly be, donation. Definitely donation of food. Make sure that it is non-perishable or last for a long duration, so that the unfortunate people may eat it, without going to be ill. It takes time to do this occasionally, but we can do this as a habit.

Wiki for Food Security Presentation

This Wiki is for the Food Security Presentation. Here, you can send information to others in Moodle. This presentation will not be graded, but remarks will be shown after you do the presentation. Remember in the presentation, you must memorize your key points (or improvise) NOT reading and NOT using note cards. Note that the comments in this Wiki are chat logs. You may see other students' contributions about other questions that they have answered to learn more, but you cannot use them because they have different questions to answer, and you may have false answers for that question if you plagiarize. Therefore, keep your information into one family.

Goal for Social Studies for Quarter 1

My strengths are:
* Locating topic sentences in a passage
* Writing a biased passage
* Determine whether the passage is biased or not
My areas of improvement are:
* Be more prepared present by NOT reading from slide to slide (work habits)
* Writing the evidence in TEE. Include journalistic questions if the passage has no evidence (knowledge)
My goal for Social Studies is to improve my TEEs on evidence by locating evidence and mentioning the evidence in the passage. (determine whether the passage has evidence or not) I will improve this by looking at interesting articles and locating evidence in the passage, by the end of the 3rd Unit in Social Studies.
My goal is to not throw trash at all in the rubbish/non-recycling bins. Discard trash in the recycling bins. This should be accomplished by the end of the 1st Semester. This shall help orphanages to use that recycling items for any purpose.

Wiki for Poverty Presentation

This wiki is for introducing ideas of how to alleviate poverty. You transfer questions and information through this wiki, just like in MSN. This is good to use because you know how your friends got the information and what questions do they have. You may also insert an attachment. Attachments cannot be opened here, but in Moodle, attachments can. Attachments will be written here. The conversations posts will not be posted here, but only in the comments section of this page. Therefore, if you want to add a comment here, you may, whereas this is branched to many networks. You may look in other families sections, but do not steal information from them, as that will be called plagiarism.

Why should I Care About the Poor?

I should care about the poor because there are unfortunate people out there, and we have to help them by living a better, comfortable life. The governments are even trying to help the unfortunate people in the world, but overpopulation causes more people in poverty to suffer severely in poverty. We, as fortunate people, must do anything we can to help them live. Solutions may be: making food donations (make sure that all the food donated is non-perishable) definitely cash donations, free schools and free clinics especially for the poor people. Poverty is very excrutiating and should be prevented as much as we can that we can do to help them.

Smoking Topic; Biased and Unbiased Sentences

Biased Sentences = Red
Unbiased Sentences = Blue
Smoking is the most disgusting, horrible, unhealthy way of showing off yourself into coolness. Smoking cigarettes/cigars have tobacco in them. According to Wikipedia, tobacco smoking may cause lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control; an agency in the United States), it is told that 440,000 people in US die every year by smoking. According to the World Health Organization, it estimates that tobacco killed 5.4 million people in 2004, and 100 million deaths in the 20th century. People are foolish and unaware of people who do not want to smoke. They just think it is cool and think that they find it in the popularity side, rather than the healthy side. Smoking should be prohibited everywhere and should never be used in the world.

School Uniforms, Summative Assessment Practice

Red = Topic Sentence/Main Idea
Blue = Examples
Green = Opinion
School uniforms have to be the grossest form of torture that schools inflict on kids. Do any teachers know how uncomfortable school uniforms are? AND how selfish it is that kids can’t show their own fashion sense freely instead of wearing someone else’s stupid and warped idea of what is fashion! I’m ashamed to wear my uniform anywhere except at school and even at school I feel humiliated-the only thing that makes it acceptable is that every other student has to wear the stupid clothes. Personally, I think I can choose my own clothes and should be trusted to do that. When I was allowed to choose my own clothes to wear to school, I felt a lot better. Now wearing a gross, boring and uninteresting uniform day in and day out, makes me feel like I should change schools. School kids should never have to wear uniforms.
Topic Sentence/Main Idea: School uniforms have to be the grossest form of torture that schools inflict on kids. (the author shows biased words such as grossest, torture, inflict)
Example 1: Do any teachers know how uncomfortable school uniforms are? AND how selfish it is that kids cannot show their own fashion sense freely instead of wearing someone else's stupid and warped idea of what is fashion! (the capitalized AND shows bias)
Evidence 1: There is no evidence. What clothes does it have to be to be in fashion? How can uniforms be not fashionable? How can teachers know how uncomfortable school uniforms are? Who is the someone else? You need do describe the uniform's color, and other specific details about the uniform.
Example 2: I’m ashamed to wear my uniform anywhere except at school and even at school I feel humiliated; the only thing that makes it acceptable is that every other student has to wear the stupid clothes.
Evidence 2: Once again, there is no evidence. Why is the author ashamed of wearing his/her uniform? Again, what is the uniform's color? Appearance? Material? You must describe what the uniform is.
Example 3: Now wearing a gross, boring and uninteresting uniform day in and day out, makes me feel like I should change schools. (biased; the author feels he/she should change schools if he/she wears a uniform.)
Evidence 3: THERE IS NO EVIDENCE! Why do you think uniforms are not fashionable? Why are uniforms boring and uninteresting? We do not know the appearance of the uniform; the author did not describe anything about it.

Why do Most Women Suffer in Poverty?

Why do most women suffer in poverty?
Women in poverty is very excruciating and agonizing. The first reason is that women are suffering in poverty is possibly that they have to stay in home, take care of children; or, maybe women are too sick to obtain a job. Many jobs in are unavailable for women. Unskilled women have joined the work force than ever before. The second reason is that women are unable to receive education and are illiterate. Well, according to the UNICEF program, the adult literacy percentage rate for women in the world is 66. The least developed countries for females have a literacy percentage rate of 38. This is the reason that females are incapable to obtain a job. Again, the reason for this are that the females must take care of their children or possibly they are suffering in extreme illness. Although, there are more women than men in secondary school enrollment in Latin America and the Caribbean. The ratio of males for secondary school enrollment is 52 and the ratio of females for secondary school enrollment is 56.
The solution to this problem is that the government use their taxes for public schools, especially for women. Women should be free of charge, while men are charged. The government may hire teachers who are qualified of literacy to teach the women who are illiterate. Another solution to eliminate the problem of fatigue and sickness is to open a clinic, mainly for women. The effects of this will have less women suffer in poverty. It is totally unfair for plenty of women to be suffering in poverty. Women should be successful like men.
Topic Sentence/Main Idea: Women in poverty is very excrutiating and agonizing.
Examples: Women barely received any education and unable to work.
Evidence: Literacy percentage rates for women in the world is 66%.
Loaded Words that are biased: excrutiating, agonizing, unfair

Poverty is a Serious Problem in the USA

Poverty is totally a serious problem in USA. According to my mom, there are some people in USA who live below the poverty line. There are some homeless people in New York, and a few in Florida. There should not be any people in United States living in poverty, because the US is a prosperous country. According to the encyclopedia, World Book 2000, The government classifies that approximately 14% of the population is poor. Some groups of Americans have poverty rates that have exceed that of the general population. These groups include Hispanic Americans and African Americans. Some families with lower than the average poverty rates include the elderly and two percent families. Most families can raise their incomes and can escape from poverty within a few years. However, many of the Americans who are poor are in the position of extreme poverty, lasting for a decade, or even greater. Many of these people in America, like my mother stated, are homeless, especially in New York. Poverty in the US has a variety of causes. One major causes can be that steady, well-paying jobs can be difficult to find and keep. Another causes can be that the people especially girls and women in the US, lack the education or skills needed for such jobs. Finally, there are others who cannot find jobs because they are too ill to work. Therefore, the government of America, brawls poverty using three ammunition. One, measures to improve job opportunities. Two, educational programs and three, social welfare programs.
Main Idea/Topic Sentence: Poverty is totally a serious problem in US.
Example: According to my mother, some people in the US are living under the poverty line.
Evidence: The US government classifies that approximately 14% of the population is poor.

Poverty Questions

What was my definition of poverty?
My mother defines poverty as:

People who are powerless to buy the main essential items: food, clothing, and housing.
My father defines poverty as:
Deprivation of the basic humans needs: food, clothing, and shelter.
Mr. Pendell defines poverty as:
Not having access to the basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter on a daily basis.
What do you have questions about poverty?
I ask the following questions:
* Why do we live in a world that involves poverty? Why can't everyone share the wealth and have jobs, and all children have education? (this isn't related to communism)
* Why are there so many people involved in this huge problem?
* In the future, will poverty be eliminated forever? Or will this problem last forever?
My mother asks the following questions:
* Why do most countries in Africa get struck with poverty?
* Why are there still poor people in U.S., although the country is rich?

My father asks the following questions:
* How can we fight back poverty?
* What countries have the most population living under the poverty line?
Mr. Pendell asks the following questions:
* What is JIS doing to reduce poverty?
* What programs are available to reduce poverty? (e.g. orphanages)
* What is the percentage of people in Jakarta living under the poverty line?
What is the minimum wage in Jakarta, Indonesia?

Jawa Barat (Jakarta) has the minimum wage of 628,191 rupiah in the year 2009.
What feelings do you have about poverty?
What I feel about poverty is that I am fully dismayed and filled with grief, because of all the children dying without medication, no food or shelter. In addition, the children do not learn much, as they can't go to school for education.

What are some ways you think will get people out of poverty?
Remember that poverty begins without a source of income. Donation of school supplies, stationery items, (of course) money, and non-perishable food. These are for educational and health purposes. Another solution may be, the government uses taxes to help the poor as charity. Or, maybe the government may use the taxes to build a public school, and then hire teachers to teach the children how to read, write, and speak. The government can also build a health clinic in villages that are poor.

What is Poverty?

Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not being able to go to school, not knowing how to read, not being able to speak properly. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time. Poverty is losing a child to illness brought about by unclean water. Poverty is powerlessness, lack of representation, and freedom.

Poverty Simulation

1. How did it feel to be poor?
Being unfortunate and poor is tough work and tiring as you need money to survive. Like in the poverty simulation, we had to make paper bags on the road, not in a cold AC room. Poor people do not have these appliances! Getting a job works for starters, but sometimes the weathering can strike and can cause sicknesses to some members of the family.
2. Do you have a better understanding about poverty? What specifically did you learn from the simulation?
Poverty is simply starting off with no or a little quantity of money, a poor quantity of income, and simply have lack of wealth to purchase essential items such as food, clothing, and housing. What I learned specifically from the simulation was that if you work more, hopefully you will earn more money. Being sick prevents you from working, and requires money to cure the sickness.
3. Is poverty just about not having money? If not, what else is involved?
Yes, Poverty is just when you have a lack of money. Poverty is when you are powerless to buy the vital main three essential items: food, clothes, and housing.
4. Who had the most and least power in the simulation?
The families who had more children/members had the most power because they cooperated very effectively and earned plenty of cash. Less powerful families consist of families that have a few children, thus, causing the income to be in a small quantity.
5. What are possible (and realistic) ways out of poverty for those like the paper bag makers and millions of others in their situation in the world today? Remember almost one billion people in the world live on less than a dollar a day.
Begging, stealing, living with friends, and living on the streets are worst ways to get out of poverty. Why? Begging might help you earn some money, but people who are richer tend to ignore and reject you and want the money for themselves. Stealing money or food is helpful to your family, but it is illegal to steal, and you could end up in prison. Living with friends may help you get out of poverty, but you may not have your children to have education. Maybe your friends will just welcome you to stay, but not pay for your family. Living on the streets is the worst plan ever. The roads are bumpy and coarse, which causes difficulty in sleeping. Therefore, the best way to get out of poverty, is to get a job that pays. If you are able to earn tons of money in that job, you may be able to get out of poverty and also survive by buying food, clothes, and a place where your family can reside.
After the poverty game: My name is Sean Limzon and I am 13 years old, who will turn 14 on September 12. My family currently lives in an old house. I sleep on the floor in the house. Fortunately, my father and my mother worked on a family farm and earned a lot of money. Unfortunately, a sickness started to begin and was contagious, that it striked all members of the family. Later, we spent so much money on food, the sickness continued and our money dropped heavily. Unfortunately, everybody died of the symptoms. It was hard to earn money!
Game money summary (I only played for one year)
Starting money: 300 goud
Total money earned: 2652 goud
Total money spent: 3011 goud
Total money in possession: -59 goud

Who is Sean Limzon

Who is Sean Limzon? I am a 16 year old student who is going to be 17 on September 12 in Jakarta International School (JIS). The computer symbol shows me as a technology geek. Now I am very serious about Grade 9 and had to stand away from my favorite games until all the work has been accomplished.
What languages does Sean speak? I can speak 3 languages. English, Spanish, and Bahasa Indonesia. My Bahasa Indonesia nearly slipped away from me because the Spanish words seem to be pushing the Bahasa words away from my brain. Therefore, I almost lost my words in Bahasa. Fortunately, I studied by looking at subtitles in TV, the Star World Channel, looking at subtitles. I thought that was an easy way to study, but I'm just still looking at them so that I can rebuild my Bahasa language dictionary.
Where does Sean come from? I come from the Philippines. I was born in Indonesia, but my father and mother decided I would be a member of the Filipino family. Unfortunately, my father did not teach me Tagalog, a language of the Philippines, (some words in Tatalog are in Spanish), so I got stuck in speaking Bahasa Indonesia.
How does Sean feel about the environment? I feel disappointed of the poor quality environment. I believe that cars that consume petroleum should be disposed into the junkyard, because it is causing pollution and global warming. Into the future, we may drown in a big ocean of water because of our acts. Technology was adapted, and cars begin to run by using electricity instead of petroleum.
When did Sean play the piano? This happened somewhere in the year 2004-2005. My mother contacted a piano teacher to teach me and my 2 brothers, Kevin and Miguel some songs. As time elapses, I begin to be more experienced in playing the instrument. Today, the piano teacher still teaches me today, but the topic is about improvisation on the piano. Some songs also help me to review the bass clef.
Why does Sean play the violin? My mother decided to purchase me a violin, as she believes that I can be talented in music, and I agreed. Fortunately, there was a violin teacher to teach me, and I learn a lot from Mr. Osi. Thus, the reason why do I play the violin, is because I am super talented, and can be famous in an orchestra or other show.
